The short answer: yes, and arguably more than ever.
Investing in cosmetic dentistry — composite bonding, porcelain veneers, dental implants — transforms your smile, but it doesn't change one of the most important rules of oral health: plaque doesn't care what your teeth are made of. The natural tooth structure surrounding any cosmetic work is still vulnerable to gum disease, decay and staining, and the restorations themselves need the right kind of care to keep performing at their best.
Many patients arrive at Fresh assuming that because their smile already looks great, they can space hygiene visits further apart. The opposite is usually true. Cosmetic patients often benefit from more frequent, more carefully-tailored hygiene appointments — not fewer.
Here are the three questions our hygienists Kerry and Holly get asked most often by patients with cosmetic dental work.
Can I still see a hygienist if I have composite bonding?
Absolutely. In fact, regular hygiene appointments are one of the best ways to protect your composite bonding. While composite bonding itself cannot decay, the natural tooth around it can still develop plaque build-up, staining and gum disease. Professional hygiene visits help keep your bonded teeth looking their best and can often prolong the lifespan of your treatment.
Composite resin has a slightly more porous surface than natural enamel, which means it can absorb stains from coffee, red wine, tea and tobacco more readily over time. Traditional polishing can also be too abrasive on bonded surfaces if performed without care — which is why gentler approaches matter for cosmetic patients. Our Fresh Plus and Fresh Platinum options include air polishing as standard, the most effective and gentle way to remove surface staining while preserving the high-gloss finish your dentist created at the time of treatment.
Composite bonding looks best when the original polish is preserved. Gentle hygiene every three to four months is the single most important thing you can do to keep that finish.
Do porcelain veneers need special cleaning?
Porcelain veneers require the same excellent oral hygiene as natural teeth. Although porcelain is highly stain-resistant, plaque and bacteria can still accumulate around the edges of the veneers and along the gumline. Regular hygiene appointments help maintain healthy gums, protect the underlying teeth and keep your smile looking bright and natural for years to come.
The most common reason veneers fail prematurely is not damage to the porcelain itself — it's gum recession or decay around the margin where the veneer meets the natural tooth. Once recession exposes that margin, the aesthetic is compromised and the restoration becomes more vulnerable. A skilled hygienist will use techniques that protect the veneer margins while thoroughly cleaning the surrounding tissue.
Our Fresh Plus and Fresh Platinum packages, both of which include air polishing, are particularly well-suited to veneer maintenance. Air polishing reaches plaque around the margins without applying pressure or abrasion to the porcelain surface itself.
Why is dental hygiene important if I have dental implants?
Healthy gums are essential for the long-term success of dental implants. Just like natural teeth, implants can be affected by plaque build-up and gum inflammation. Regular hygiene visits allow us to professionally clean around your implants, monitor gum health and identify any early signs of peri-implant disease before they become more serious. This helps maximise the lifespan of your implant investment.
Peri-implantitis — the implant equivalent of gum disease — is the leading cause of implant failure once an implant has been successfully placed. It's silent in its early stages, often painless, and can result in bone loss around the implant if left untreated. The good news: it's almost entirely preventable with consistent professional hygiene care.
For implant patients we strongly recommend Fresh Plus at minimum, ideally Fresh Platinum for patients with multiple implants or a history of gum disease. Air polishing is the standard of care around implants because metal instruments can scratch the implant surface and damage the protective layer that keeps them integrated with the bone.
Which Fresh package is right for cosmetic patients?
If you have any form of cosmetic dental work, the entry-level Fresh Essential is generally not the right fit — it doesn't include air polishing. We'd recommend:
- Fresh Plus (£85) — Suits most cosmetic patients with a stable routine. Includes scale and polish, full mouth assessment, and air polishing.
- Fresh Platinum (£95) — Best for patients with multiple restorations, a history of staining, or anyone wanting the most thorough premium experience. Everything in Fresh Plus, plus extended assessment and personalised aftercare.
If your cosmetic work is recent — within the last twelve months — or you've ever had gum disease around an implant or bonded tooth, Fresh Perio (from £125) may be more appropriate. It's a longer appointment specifically structured around periodontal stability.
